City Lab aims to be an innovative approach to liberal education in the 21st century.  Its center of gravity is the convergence of teaching and research that takes the form of a workshop that explores the 21st century urban experience.  Each semester the workshop takes a core theme from 21st century urbanism as a collective research topic.

City Lab follows an integrated studies model, which invites students from other disciplines and programs to participate in the workshop from their particular academic home.  It seeks to be a classroom beyond walls by integrating the workshop with experiential learning opportunities, such as study abroad, independent research, and internships.  City Lab aims to work with institutions and organizations beyond DePauw.

The workshop operates at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels.  Introductory level students will learn complexity thinking, while intermediate students will learn urban studies, and the advanced level students will undertake substantive research projects.

City Lab operates from a critical theory perspective, and has an anti-oppression pedagogy as one of its guiding principles.
