Smart Cities Monitor

The Smart Cities Monitor is a research collaborative formed between Glen Kuecker (City Lab) and Kris Hartley (University of Melbourne).  Its primary objective is to analyze current developments within the urban movement toward smart cities.  The project’s central premise is that the global community is turning to smart cities as the way to implement the aspirational goals of UN Habitat’s New Urban Agenda (Habitat III).  The project approaches analysis of smart cities from the perspective of critical urban theory, especially its critique of instrumental reasoning and technocratic solutions.  The Smart Cities Monitor positions smart cities within the perfect storm of global crises, Henri Lefebvre’s planetary urbanization, and the reproduction of capital in the 21st century.  The Smart Cities Monitor aims to become a “go to” place for researchers interested in up-to-date information about smart cities.
