Farukh Sarkulov ('20)

Farukh Sarkulov is a junior at DePauw University and has been operating under the City Lab pedagogy since his freshman year. His work uses complex systems theory and critical analyses on the political and economic contexts that cities are forced to operate under. His current work focuses heavily on urbanization in India, specifically on the plans to develop smart cities and the need for urban adaptation in the face of rising migratory pressures.  He conducted Filed research in Delhi, Bangalore, and Jaiupur in January 2018 and received a grant from the Douglas B. White Fund to support the work.  The fieldwork focused on India's Smart Cities Misson.  Farukh's aim in City Lab is to expose the underlying connections between politics and economics and how that effects the sociological evolution of cities. Beautiful buildings and skylines are aesthetically pleasing, but the realities that such urbanization brings to the majority of city dwellers is far from socially just.  Farukh was born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan but resides in Chicago, Illinois with his parents. He is currently pursuing a dual degree in Urban Engineering and Mathematics and hopes to pursue a minor in Philosophy.
